Christmas Cookie Ornaments are an easy and fun idea for decorating your home over the holidays in a sweet and original way. As we’ll see, the recipe for these Hanging Christmas Cookies is really simple: just make a lemon-scented shortcrust dough, which doesn’t even need to rest in the fridge, and once it’s rolled out thin you can have fun cutting out lots of cookies in classic Christmas shapes.

To make these Cookies to Hang on the Tree, we used cute 3D cookie cutters so that each cookie also has details on its surface, but there are countless ways to decorate them, leaving plenty of room for imagination. The only thing to remember is to make a small hole in each Christmas Cookie so that, once baked, you can thread a ribbon through it and hang them on the tree or on garlands. Kids will have a great time making them with you.

Method

  1. To make the Christmas Cookie Ornaments, combine the flour, sugar, egg yolks, baking powder, the grated zest of half a lemon, the seeds of half a vanilla bean and the cold butter, cut into small pieces, in a bowl.
  2. Knead the ingredients until you have a smooth, firm ball of dough. Roll out the dough with a rolling pin on a work surface dusted with a pinch of flour into a sheet about 4-5 mm (3/16 inch) thick. Cut out the Christmas cookie shapes and make a small hole in each one, which you’ll use to thread the ribbon through to hang them once they’re ready.
  3. Arrange the cookies well apart on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake them in a preheated conventional oven at 180 °C (350 °F) for about 20 minutes. When they are nicely golden, take them out of the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack. Your Christmas Cookie Ornaments are ready to use. Variations and Alternatives

If you like, you can flavor the Christmas Cookie Ornaments with orange zest instead of lemon, or by adding some ground spices such as cinnamon, ginger or juniper berries. With the same recipe you can also make chocolate cookie ornaments: just replace 50 g of the flour with 25-30 g of unsweetened cocoa powder.

Tips

If you’d like the shortcrust of your Christmas Cookies to be crumblier, you can let the dough rest in the fridge for about half an hour, covered with plastic wrap. Then, before rolling it out, knead it for a few moments to make it pliable again, so it won’t break.

Storage

Christmas Cookie Ornaments keep in an airtight container for 4-5 days.
