Homemade Pomegranate Liqueur, known in Italy as Liquore alla Melagrana (in Italian, melograno is the tree and melagrana the fruit), is a sweet, aromatic and delicious liqueur, ideal to serve as a digestif.

The pomegranate is a delicious fall fruit said to bring luck and good health, and since ancient times it has been considered a symbol of good fortune. So why not turn it into a delicious pomegranate liqueur, also ideal as a gift for friends and family? Making Pomegranate Liqueur isn’t difficult: you just need plenty of patience and to follow grandma’s recipe, which strictly calls for removing all the seeds and waiting about a month before you can taste it (between macerating and resting).

If you’re wondering how to make pomegranate liqueur, just read our recipe and try making it right away. You won’t need anything special besides pomegranates, food-grade alcohol, a small saucepan and some bottles. If you like, you can also flavor your Pomegranate Liqueur with cinnamon, but you can choose whatever flavorings you prefer or keep it more “natural”.

Method

  1. To make the Pomegranate Liqueur, start by removing the seeds from the pomegranates into a bowl (if you don’t know how, follow our guide). When you’re done, cover the seeds with the alcohol, seal the bowl with a lid or plastic wrap and leave to infuse for 10 days in a dark, dry place.
  2. After 10 days of macerating, it’s time to separate the seeds from the alcohol: pour the alcohol through a strainer into a new bowl and crush the seeds with a potato masher to extract as much of their essence as possible.
  3. Put a small saucepan on the heat with the water and sugar to make the syrup, and heat the syrup without letting it boil: the sugar just needs to dissolve. Turn off the heat and let it cool.
  4. Once the syrup has cooled, add it to the alcohol mixture and stir. Using a funnel, pour your liqueur into glass bottles (cleaned and dried beforehand).
  5. Let it rest for 20-30 days before serving, then all that’s left is to enjoy your delicious Pomegranate Liqueur (strictly cold) or give it as a gift. Finally, remember to download our App with exclusive content and fewer ads!

Variations and Alternatives

If you like, you can flavor your pomegranate liqueur with a cinnamon stick, a few cloves, lemon peel or ginger. Just add your favorite ingredients during the macerating stage. The flavor will of course be spicier.

If instead you want a redder Pomegranate Liqueur, just add the juice of half a pomegranate to the alcohol and seeds while they infuse. Be sure to extract the juice with a juicer, though.

Tips

Make sure you remove all the white membrane from the seeds, so your liqueur doesn’t take on a bitter taste.

Storage

Store Pomegranate Liqueur in the fridge: it’s best served cold.
