Glögg, a traditional Scandinavian winter drink rich in history and flavor, is the perfect embodiment of warmth and conviviality on cold winter nights. Originally from the Nordic countries, this drink has become a must during the Christmas holidays, symbolizing togetherness, warmth and celebration. Making it is a ritual in itself, bringing together aromatic spices, red wine and a touch of sweetness to create a unique sensory experience.

The Glögg Recipe dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was used as a warming drink during the coldest months. At first it was simply wine heated with spices. Over the centuries, however, the recipe evolved to include ingredients such as sugar, almonds, raisins and sometimes even strong spirits like brandy or rum, for an extra touch of warmth and depth.

The secret of the Original Glögg Recipe lies in the choice of spices. Cinnamon, cloves, ginger and cardamom take center stage, creating a bouquet of aromas that instantly brings the holiday atmosphere to mind. These spices not only add flavor but are also known for their warming, invigorating properties, making Glögg as good for you as it is tasty.

Making Glögg is a meditative and festive process that often turns into a social activity. Families and friends gather around the stove, stirring and tasting, each adding their own personal touch to the recipe. Every family has its own version, handed down from generation to generation, making each Glögg unique and personal.

This Glögg recipe is a celebration of tradition, an invitation to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of winter. With its rich combination of wine, spices and sweetness, Glögg is more than just a drink: it’s an experience that warms body and soul, bringing people together and creating unforgettable memories.

Method

  1. To make the Glögg, start by peeling the orange and the lemon with a vegetable peeler, taking care not to take any of the white pith. In a large saucepan, put the cinnamon sticks, cloves, cardamom seeds, the peeled pieces of ginger, the raisins, almonds, lemon zest and orange zest, then pour in the red wine.
  2. Set the pan over the heat and warm gently for 10-15 minutes, without ever letting the mixture boil. Then add the aquavit, heat for a few minutes, and the Glögg is ready to serve, strictly hot. Finally, remember to download our App with exclusive content and fewer ads!
