Butter Cookies are simple, buttery cookies that come together quickly and easily: all you need is a few ingredients and just 30 minutes. They are one of those classic grandmother’s recipes that are handed down in families from generation to generation.

Homemade Butter Cookies are perfect for dunking in coffee, tea, milk and even hot chocolate. They can also be decorated however you like with Royal Icing, which is why they are often made for the holidays, with decorations and shapes that recall Christmas or Easter.

Holiday-themed cookies are always a hit. So, besides Christmas Butter Cookies, you can also make Chocolate Stars, Chocolate Hazelnut Logs and Gingerbread Cookies. Now let’s see how to make Butter Cookies.

Method

  1. To make the Butter Cookies, take a medium bowl and mix the butter, cut into small pieces beforehand, with the sugar until crumbly. Add the egg, vanilla, flour, salt and baking powder and knead with your hands.
  2. When the dough is fairly firm, move to a lightly floured work surface and keep kneading until you have a firm ball of dough. Wrap it in plastic wrap and let it rest in the fridge for about half an hour.
  3. When the resting time is up, roll out the dough with a rolling pin to a thickness of 3 to 5 millimeters (1/8 to 1/4 inch). Using a cookie cutter in the shape you prefer, cut out as many cookies as you can, then arrange them a little apart on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  4. Sprinkle them with a few grains of granulated sugar, then bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C (350 °F) for 10-12 minutes. Take them out of the oven and let them cool, then serve the Butter Cookies. Finally, remember to download our App with exclusive content and fewer ads!

Variations and Alternatives

If you like, you can decorate your Butter Cookies with Royal Icing. You can also make Chocolate Butter Cookies by adding Chocolate Chips or Unsweetened Cocoa Powder to the dough.

Tips

I recommend using cookie cutters in different shapes so you don’t waste any of the dough. If you prefer a more rustic look, you can skip the cutters and shape the cookies by hand.

Storage

You can store the Butter Cookies in a tin or a cookie jar for a few days.
